My Boss Can't make a schedule

I work for a home health-care company and our schedules are planed a month at a time. My regular client had traveled out of town with family and didn't need our services so I was assigned to a temporary client. Upon returning to my regular client I find that my boss has shafted, I'm sorry, scheduled me to work on my birthday again. On my birthday he calls me to cover a shift with the temporary client (who I requested not to work with again) on a different shift and have someone else cover my regular 3rd shift and is amazed that I already had plans for the day. This is also after I had told him several times he scheduled me on the same weekend as a conference that I attend yearly to buy tools and take classes for my private business. On an almost monthly basis the new schedule won't show up until the 3rd or 4th and we are on 2 week rotations! When I bring any of this up with his boss (also his dad) all I get is "your region is his responsibility and everything has to go through his office".

There are one of two things going on here, I think.

1. He is either deliberately ignoring the needs of his employees or else

2. he is overwhelmed with his responsibilities and is unable to schedule very far in advance.

This may be his weak area. He may need some help from someone with better organizational and planning skills.

Let him know of your frustration, and offer to help him with the schedule. He may be grateful and let you do it.

If he does not let you and continues messing things up you may need to either learn to live with it or go look for someone else to work with.
