The idiot does not want give up control

The company has grown and they are hiring professionals, but the Managing Director is not letting the managers do their jobs. He wants to micro manage everthing. He also has the old outdated philosophy that staff has to be pushed and not motivated. Our turn over of staff is rediculous, simply because he cannot see any other point of view.

His way is the only way.

if this keeps up, eventually his superiors will see the high turnover and want to turn him over . . . to another employer.

micro-managers are the most insecure "leaders" in the room. your boss does not want to give up control because he is afraid if he does not see to it, it won't be seen to. if he does not do it, it won't get done right. it is an ego thing as well as a fear factor. his thought is: "i am the best, and if i am not involved it will be second-best."

so you're dealing with pride and fear.

he is probably a pusher instead of a leader because (a) he's never been taught how to lead properly and (b) he was pushed earlier in his career and it is the only method of leadership he understands. you can't change that in him. either he will see the folly of his style and change or he will remain stuck in it and make everyone around him miserable. your only hope is for one of his superiors to see his style and disapprove and have the guts to say something to him.

i used to think hr would advocate for you but i have learned most people in hr are cowards and have no power and little influence --except to carry out management's directives against employees.

if hr is noticing the high turnover, they need to address the issue with his superiors and ask the question out loud: "why do we have so much turnover in this one department?" if there is one common denominator -- him -- then the answer to the problem becomes simple . . . if they have the guts to pull the trigger.
