A boss who knows nothing at all, yet he decides everything aimlessly!!

It's been a month since the arrival of the new Supervisor to the place i work in. We've heard that he is a cool boss but to our disappointment, he is anything but cool.

He doesn't know the basics to run a unit!! He wants to decide every little thing. Yet, he has no idea about anything!! We try to explain things to him but he doesn't bother to listen and his main concern is "The bottom line is that you do what i just i said!!"

For God's sake!! Is this a professional way to discuss business!! What is wrong with this guy!! We all wonder!! One colleague says it's apparently an ego problem or maybe low-self esteem!! He just listens to himself!!

I say, this is all because of poor management! How on earth could they assign someone as a Supervisor who has no knowledge at all of our business and worse not even the basics of a good communication skills!! What kind of boss is this!!

We are all frustrated and upset...work is getting worse day after day...the unit is just like a ship sinking deep in the ocean and nobody is able to do anything!!

Tell me...what can i do with this boss!! should i seek higher management for help or just swallow it and watch us sink and finish!!

Someone placed him in this postion. Either because they are desperate for a warm body and he fit the bill. Or he impressed them with his resume and interview. Whatever the case, he is in and now he is a problem. From how you describe his communication skills, he is not very intelligent. He sounds intimidated by people who know more than he does. Which means he is insecure and selfish. If he were smart, he would get your opinions, build a consensus and make you all responsible for helping the unit succeed.

First, ask to speak with his supervisor in private and ask that your meeting be confidential. Tell him/her what has been done and said and ask if they can get involved and help this new manager out. Hopefully, if they are proactive and "hands-on" they will and things will improve.

If that fails, go to HR and see if they can help. Cite dates, times, places and specific words said or deeds done that you object to and ask what they recommend. Hopefully, that will help facilitate a dialogue between you, the errant manager, others who are not happy with him (that you will have to recruit to come forward and speak up), his manager, your manager and the HR rep.

Word of caution: your coworkers may be unwilling to join you due to fear of losing their jobs or starting a war with this manager. If they are willing to write down what they have seen and heard that is unprofessional and sign their names to it, they will have the guts to come forward. If they are unwilling to do so, they will probably chicken out when push comes to shove and leave you hanging out to dry.

Managers who are rude and abusive have mental problems that you cannot fix. Either a company cares enough about its people to root these aberrations out of the system or they do not. But first they must be told. Things must be documented, and it must come from more than just you. If a group complains, things may change. If you stand alone against him, he will make your life miserable until you quit. If the company authorities (his bosses) are told, and they elect to keep him in place, you need to re-write your resume and look for work eslewhere. Because the company is sending you a silent message: WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU.

You can leave and send them a message back: THE FEELING IS MUTUAL.
