Cronyism rules

I work for a midsize family business that recently passed to the next generation. The spoiled little boy now running the firm has made several hires, all of which seem to be based on cronyism and who he likes to hang out with rather than who would be best at the job. He recently announced the elevation of an old high school buddy to lead one of the most important departments in the company. The guy has less than a year of experience. Not to mention the fact that he's going to be directly supervising one of his own close family members. Gaaaahh!

Classic recipe for disaster!

I am in the process of writing a book with a chapter called: "Nine Common Mistakes Hiring Managers Make". The first mistake I list and discuss is this one: "Hiring friends and family members."

In short, this is bad for two reasons:

1. your feelings for them cloud your judgment as to their effectiveness;

2. to discipline or fire them destroys the relationship or damages it severely.

It is sad when you see people work hard to develop and build a strong company and then see them hand it off to a second-generation who are too foolish to be in control and slowly lose it due to their incompetence.

You forgot No. 3:

It destroys employee trust in management making the correct decisions and results in low employee morale and higher turnover.
