Wrong Boss for Wrong Business

I was unemployed when I was offered a position doing just about everything at a start up sign shop. I decided to take it on, seeing that I didn't have any management experience and I needed a job. The first month was slow, little things were happening I thought would get worked out by the boss. Not the case, as time went on, I wasn't getting pay stubs, but written checks. Every time I offered my opinion (well researched or known by me) he would normally take his question to another group of "owners" in this network and forget my suggestion, finding out later that we should have gone my way on a project and having to deal with all the crap that happened with it. I do all the design, production, maintenance, inventory (not much), then on top I am a salesman, going to networking meetings and getting work into the shop. I've worked with him for 9 months, with no review of my skills, no incentive program to keep me motivated, nothing. Same thing every day, and all the responsibility to complete a project falls on my shoulder. He commands the pricing and I have no access to the pricing software so jobs that I could quote slip though my fingers and I can't do anything about it. He is constantly gone, and i am left sitting here on days like this with absolutely no motivation to do anything else but bitch about him.

This is a common problem with small businesses where the manager has little or no experience in managing people or developing an organization. I am sure the owners would like to see the company grow. I am also sure it will never will with a manager like this in charge.

With all the hats you are wearing how do you have time to write this complaint down?

One thing that would help is if you could sit down and have a meeting with him to discuss

a. the future direction of the company and your role in it;

b. any future plans on either giving you a raise or else building into the pay system some sort of incentive or bonus plan;

c. a refined pay system that is safer and easier to operate than signing checks to you;

d. the possibility of hiring more personnel to handle the various jobs you are doing.

It would help if some of the "owners" who pay the bills were there as well as I am sure they would be interested in hearing your ideas. In fact, since they seem to be the decision-makers I would say having a talk with all or just one of them would be more beneficial than just speaking with your manager. If your boss remains a barrier between you and them then you are stuck.

On a positive note, this has been good experience in that you have had the opportunity to learn some new things. If you can't help change things to get better, you might want to update your resume and look elsewhere. Sounds like you are an industrious and hard worker.
