So many dumb bosses, so little time

I just recently argued with a boss who "forgot" she ordered a schedule change so a new employee could start working...nevermind the background checks weren't finished yet! The boss demanded to know why I put the new employee on the schedule...so I told her. The silence treatment has followed.

I worked as a 9-1-1 (UK friends 9-9-9) operator. A boss came in, unplugged a piece of equipment, plugged in a new piece, and left.
I had to argue with him for the new instruction manual...which showed the new equipment worked differently, and would NOT have worked the way he left it. The equipment was for deaf/hearing restricted callers to text message (TDD) for help!

Boss: You have to sign this piece of paper.
Me: No, Sir, I don't.
Boss: If you don't I'll write you up.
Me: You already wrote me up, and I'm not signing it.
Boss: Why don't you be reasonable?
Me: Why don't you get the facts before writing me up??
(Never saw that write up again either)

It is incidents like these that make you wonder what they are thinking when they screen and hire managers. Shouldn't there be some sort of IQ Test? Or perhaps a series of "what if . . ." scenarios they have to walk through?

As an HR Guy, I interview lots of folks in consideration of employment. Usually, top-level managers make recommendations as to who we need to bring in when it comes to executive-level or middle management decisions. It always amazes me when I run into low-level or middle-level managers who pull stunts like these listed above. I can assure you, these types of so-called "leaders" never rise much further than where you meet them (unless of course they are municipal, state or federal employees - in which case, they could go to the top!)

I am convinced many of these poor examples of leaders have never had serious, logical training in how to build a consensus, how to lead, how to persuade, how to build a team. They seem to specialize in "me first" mentalities that instead tear down, ruin and destroy their employees morale.

Fight on, fellow laborers! Educate yourself, work hard to make your boss look godd, get the license or certificate you need to advance and maybe one day you will be put in charge! (Then your team can write bad things about you, too!)
